Types of Hardwood Flooring
Solid hardwood floors are milled from a single piece of wood. solid hardwood is vulnerable to temperature and humidity changes and cannot be installed below grade or in damp spaces.
Engineered hardwood is constructed of layers of plies bonded together in a cross-grain pattern. . Engineered wood is also treated to withstand higher levels of humidity and can be installed in bathrooms or sub level areas such as finished basements because it does well on concrete subfloors and radiant heating elements.
Solid wood flooring is known to be the original hardwood thanks to its simple composition. Each plank is made from a genuine piece of wood with nothing else added except a top finish. Usually hardwood planks come ¾” thick, but there are thicker options available for high traffic areas.
Engineered hardwood has the look of solid hardwood, but also has extra support and stability. Although solid wood is uniform, engineered hardwood is composed of three to seven layers of real wood. Both look the same since the top layer of engineered flooring is a piece of premium wood.
